Chapter 28

Overview

Newt formalizes Thomas’s Runner training and vows to jail Gally, while pressing Thomas to probe his memories. At the Homestead, the comatose girl’s sleep-talk hints at the Creators and change. Thomas recognizes her as Teresa and hears her telepathically reveal she’s a trigger and that “they” caused this. Overwhelmed, Thomas bolts into the Maze.

Summary

Newt leads Thomas from the Homestead after Alby’s breakdown. Over food, Newt says Gally will be jailed for threatening Thomas and outlines Thomas’s path: stay with Newt today, spend tomorrow in the Slammer, then begin Runner training with Minho. Thomas accepts, preferring distance from the other Gladers.

Newt presses Thomas to admit anything familiar about the Glade. Thomas confesses the place felt oddly familiar upon arrival and that he immediately wanted to be a Runner. Newt urges him to keep searching his mind and, if necessary, even consider a Griever sting to trigger memories.

They visit the comatose girl. Med‑jack Clint reports she sleep-talks about change, the Creators, that it all must end, and she repeatedly says Thomas’s name. After Clint leaves, Thomas studies her and senses recognition. A name surfaces—Teresa—seemingly heard inside his mind rather than aloud.

Thomas begins hearing Teresa telepathically: they are the last ones, her memory is fading, they can pass the Trials, and she was sent as a trigger. The messages intensify, including the claim that “we did this to them. To us.” The dissonance panics Thomas; he flees the Homestead despite Newt’s confusion.

Unable to silence the voice, Thomas sprints out of the Glade and deep into the Maze, breaking rules as Teresa’s final warning repeats that everything is going to change.
