Chapter 45
Overview
Thomas and Minho return exhausted, reporting no exits as morale collapses and another Glader, Adam, is taken by Grievers. In the Map Room, Teresa confirms the Maze’s repeating code: FLOAT, CATCH, BLEED, DEATH, STIFF, PUSH. With hope dwindling, Thomas conceals a plan to regain memories by deliberately enduring the Changing.
Summary
After roughly twenty-four hours in the Maze, Thomas and Minho return to the Glade to find daily chores continuing despite the dead sky. Newt rushes over, hoping for breakthroughs. Minho, despondent, reports that the Maze walls never moved and no exits exist; Newt confirms a Griever took Adam during the night.
Minho erupts in frustration and storms off toward the Homestead, leaving Thomas and Newt shaken. Other Runners soon return with identical results, and work across the Glade stalls as despair spreads. Thomas concludes that the Maze code remains their only viable lead.
Thomas contacts Teresa telepathically and heads to the basement Map Room. There, amid scattered tracings, Teresa and several helpers present the decoded sequence extracted from months of patterns: FLOAT, CATCH, BLEED, DEATH, STIFF, PUSH, repeating weekly from FLOAT after PUSH. Though certain of the order, no one understands the meaning.
Confronted with the bleakness of the message and Minho’s absence, Thomas is struck by a disturbing idea. He feigns fatigue and leaves without sharing it. Determined to recover lost memories that might clarify the code and offer a way out, Thomas decides to be stung by a Griever and undergo the Changing on purpose.
