Chapter 32

Overview

Before dawn, Minho outfits Thomas with Runner gear and introduces him to a hidden weapons cache. They visit the Map Room, where Minho explains the Maze’s eight Sections, fixed Doors, and the long-running mapping effort. Despite finding monthly pattern repeats and deadly nights, there’s still no exit, and Thomas begins formal training.

Summary

Minho wakes Thomas before dawn and leads him to a storage closet, issuing Runner essentials: specialized shoes, a watch he must never remove, a backpack, water, food, clothes, and tight runner underwear. He explains that supplies are requested via the Box, though the Creators only fulfill some.

Minho then reveals a locked basement weapons cache, hidden to keep it from Gladers like Gally. Among dusty gear, Thomas selects two sharp knives, uneasy about why they’re needed but reassured most weapons go unused. After breakfast and packing, they head to the Map Room.

Inside the stark, copper-scented room, Minho outlines the Maze: the Glade is surrounded by eight numbered Sections. Four additional Doors out in the Maze lead to Sections One, Three, Five, and Seven; main corridors near the Glade don’t shift, but deeper walls move nightly. He shows trunks filled with daily Maps for each Section, logging changes for hundreds of days.

Minho explains that while monthly pattern repeats have been observed, no exit has ever appeared, and earlier attempts to stay out overnight ended in death. Despite the bleak record, Minho insists they can’t give up. Thomas agrees, accepts he’s part of the team, and commits to follow Minho as his Runner training officially begins.
