Chapter 7
Overview
Alby gives Thomas a no-questions tour of the Glade, explaining the Box, the four sections, job rotations, and the strict rule that only Runners may enter the Maze. Thomas resolves to become a Runner. An unexpected alarm announces the Box rising with another Newbie—an unprecedented event that shocks the Gladers.
Summary
Alby begins Thomas’s tour at the sealed Box, explaining its monthly delivery of a Newbie and weekly supplies, while admitting the Gladers know nothing about who controls it. He outlines the Glade’s four sections—Gardens, Blood House, Homestead, and Deadheads—describing their self-sufficiency and the graveyard that hints at past deaths.
As they pass the Blood House, Thomas notes his selective memory: he recognizes animals but not his past. Alby points out the Slicers’ work in the barn. In the Deadheads’ shadowed trees, Thomas again notices red-flickering Beetle Blades, reinforcing the sense of being watched.
At the South Door, Alby identifies the Maze and emphasizes the Number One Rule: only Runners may enter, with death the consequence for breaking it. The moving walls and years of failed mapping underscore the danger. Despite fear, Thomas feels a powerful pull toward the Maze and silently commits to becoming a Runner.
Thomas spots a silver Beetle Blade vanish into ivy; Alby names it as a surveillance device of the Creators. Suddenly, an alarm blares. Confusion spreads as Alby and others converge on the Box. Newt reveals the shock: a Newbie is arriving now—two in as many days—something that has never happened, raising the stakes and unsettling the Glade.
