CHAPTER SIXTY-SIX: AMARI
Overview
Amari is summoned into a dream by Inan, who blames Nehanda and offers to concede the throne to end the war. Amari rejects him, vowing to win and remake Orïsha. Waking, she hardens her resolve and crafts a ruthless, secret adjustment to the Ibadan plan with Jahi, excluding the other elders.
Summary
Amari awakens in a surreal field of reeds and daffodils, sensing another presence. Inan appears and urgently insists they talk, claiming the devastation stems from Nehanda. He argues he did not order the sanctuary attack and, shaken, offers to concede the throne for Orïsha’s good.
Amari, remembering Inan’s past betrayals and Zélie’s suffering, refuses to trust him. Though she recognizes his pain, she rejects his outstretched hand, vows to become the greatest queen and change the kingdom, and demands release from the dream. The dreamscape fades as both admit they never wanted this conflict.
Jolting awake beside a sleeping Tzain, Amari replays Inan’s warning that Nehanda will sacrifice anything. Determined to win, she resolves to be as ruthless as necessary. She concludes that villagers used as shields at Ibadan tie Iyika’s hands and that the plan must account for removing that constraint.
Amari quietly dresses, slips into the hall, and seeks Jahi. She wakes the Winder and insists they revise the Ibadan strategy. Declaring the change will remain between them, Amari begins a secret plan that excludes the other elders.
