CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE: AMARI
Overview
Amari defies the Iyika and challenges Ramaya for Connector elder in a sacred duel. Ramaya dominates with precise Connector magic, publicly humiliating Amari. Cornered, Amari unleashes uncontrolled tîtán power, invading Ramaya’s mind and nearly killing her. The duel ends in crisis, deepening divisions as Khani stabilizes Ramaya and Zélie protects a shaken Amari.
Summary
On the mountain, Amari publicly challenges Ramaya for the Connector elder seat, arguing that tîtáns must be included in the fight for Orïsha. Despite opposition, Mama Agba affirms Amari’s right to contend under ìjà mímó, warning restraint. Zélie protests that elders must know maji ways, but Amari chooses the challenge, prioritizing the war and her claim to lead.
The duel begins. Amari opens with raw Connector magic, but Ramaya evades and counters with punishing, precise incantations that ignite Amari’s mind and body. As the crowd cheers Ramaya, she taunts Amari and intensifies the pain, forcing Amari to the brink of concession and humiliation.
Driven by desperation and anger at Ramaya’s contempt for her and her family, Amari abandons control and taps deeper into her tîtán power. She tackles Ramaya and unleashes a devastating mental assault, ripping through Ramaya’s memories and trauma while injuring herself as the magic spirals beyond control.
Others pull Amari back as Ramaya seizes and collapses, unresponsive. Khani rushes in, finds a faint pulse, and declares Ramaya alive but barely. Zélie embraces and shields a trembling Amari, while the Iyika witnesses the duel’s grim end and the widening fracture between maji and tîtáns.
