CHAPTER SIXTY-THREE: ZÉLIE

Outside the sanctuary’s revelry, Zélie mourns Mâzeli and cannot bear to join the celebration. Mama Agba approaches, apologizing for the fatal choice during the ritual and insisting it saved Zélie. Consumed by guilt and anger, Zélie rejects her, saying to pretend she died that day, and flees.

At Zélie’s quarters, Roën arrives with gear and briskly demands her help. He leads her out under the night, riding his cheetanaire across plains to a coastal boat. Zélie, drawn by the sea’s solace, follows despite lingering grief.

Offshore, Roën equips them with breathing masks and deploys a net of glowing orbs that illuminates swarming sea life. He tows Zélie deeper, where a bioluminescent blue whale hurtles past. Roën fires a hooked line beneath its flipper, and the whale’s ascent drags them through the ocean, breaching into the moonlit air before releasing them.

Tossed by waves, Zélie surfaces exhilarated, laughing for the first time since Mâzeli’s death. When she asks why he did it, Roën admits he wanted to see her smile again. The moment doesn’t erase her pain or fix her break with Mama Agba, but it restores a fragile spark of wonder and hope.
