CHAPTER SIXTY-EIGHT: INAN

Overview

As the Iyika near Lagos, Inan resolves to call off the war but is confronted by Ojore, who has learned Nehanda killed his family. Ojore vows to kill Nehanda and clashes with Inan. In the fight, Ojore reveals unexpected ashê, escalating the internal fracture as battle looms.

Summary

Inan sits with Nehanda and military leaders in Ibadan’s fortress as news arrives that the Iyika approach Lagos. Nehanda confirms troops are ready, smiling even at Ojore, whose burns she caused. Overwhelmed by her crimes and the looming bloodshed, Inan leaves to get air despite Nehanda’s call to stay.

Inside an iron ahéré, Inan resolves to end the conflict regardless of Amari’s stance. Ojore enters instead of Nehanda, his burns stark in the lantern light. Inan urges calling off the attack, but Ojore demands Inan face him and the truth.

Ojore reveals he came to rejoin the fighting in Lagos, only to witness Inan and Nehanda “celebrating” his family’s death, realizing Nehanda, not the maji, was responsible. Shattered, he swears to kill Nehanda. Inan blocks the door, promising justice but prioritizing the lives at stake in Lagos.

Ojore raises his sword and orders Inan aside. When Inan sparks blue magic, Ojore attacks. Inan dodges, insisting he doesn’t want to hurt Ojore, then throws a dagger to disable him. Ojore halts the blade midair with dark green ashê, revealing hidden power and deepening the rift as the war’s decisive moment nears.
