CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE: AMARI
Overview
Racing toward Chândomblé, the Iyika halt when Dakarai’s vision shows Nehanda and tîtáns guarding a new iron bridge and the temple. Recognizing a direct assault would be disastrous, Amari urges restraint and proposes a stealth plan. Her initiative shifts group dynamics, positioning Amari to influence strategy and pursue possible peace.
Summary
As the Iyika race through the jungle toward Chândomblé, Amari worries that seizing the sacred scrolls will spark an immediate attack on Lagos and force a catastrophic showdown. Determined to prove herself and seek peace, Amari resolves to find a way to contact Inan before bloodshed escalates.
Na’imah stops the riders, and Dakarai announces a vision. The Seer conjures a starlit window that weakly projects the temple’s surroundings. He strengthens the vision, revealing a newly built iron bridge linking the cliffs and a significant garrison of soldiers, nearly half tîtáns, guarding the approach.
Among the guards, Amari and Zélie recognize Nehanda, confirming that the queen mother personally commands the defense. The sight raises the stakes: if the Iyika attack head-on, Nehanda could annihilate them; if they prevail, they might move directly on Lagos. The group debates, with Kenyon pushing for an immediate assault.
Amari counters, invoking the last disastrous clash with Nehanda and the risk of alerting the enemy. With the elders watching, Amari sketches tactics in the dirt and proposes a stealth approach. Her plan aims to bypass the defenses, limit casualties, and potentially reach Inan, marking a pivotal moment where Amari earns the group’s attention and begins to direct strategy.
