CHAPTER FORTY: INAN
Overview
Inan witnesses the Iyika’s explosive breakout and Amari unleashing newfound Connector power that incapacitates Nehanda. Torn between blood and duty, Amari spares Inan. Ojore pulls Inan from the melee, but Inan cannot access the dreamscape and chooses to pursue Zélie instead, sharpening personal stakes amid the chaos.
Summary
Amid an explosion and choking smoke in Chândomblé, Inan sees bodies strewn across the hall and Jokôye maimed and unconscious. Nehanda orders the attackers stopped, then ignites her emerald power as seven Iyika figures charge from the haze. Amari counters with a navy light flaring from her chest, sending blue waves that blast through soldiers.
The surge strikes Nehanda, who collapses in pain as her golden mask skitters across the stone. When Amari raises her hand toward Inan, she locks eyes with him and chooses not to attack, revealing lingering loyalty to her brother even as armies collide.
Ojore drags Inan away, pulling him up the stairs and into a cramped room as Iyika boots thunder past. Inan, still spiritually tethered to Zélie, attempts to pull her into his dreamscape, but a splitting pain blocks his magic, leaving him unable to enter.
Determined and conflicted, Inan ignores caution. After Ojore heads back to aid Nehanda and Jokôye, Inan runs after the pull of Zélie’s “sea-salt soul,” choosing pursuit over safety as the battle rages.
