CHAPTER FIFTY-SEVEN: INAN
Overview
Surveying the devastated Iyika base, Inan mourns Jokôye and concludes peace is impossible. Nehanda urges an immediate assault, but Inan rejects it, vowing total war. He commits to a divide-and-conquer strategy to break the Iyika, deciding to weaponize his own notoriety against Amari and Zélie.
Summary
Inan surveys the wreckage outside the Iyika base, shaken by the death toll and the absence of Jokôye’s recovered body. Remembering the general’s faith in their tîtáns, he honors Jokôye and recognizes that the battle intended for peace has only proved how destructive the conflict has become.
Nehanda presses for an immediate follow-up assault, warning that hesitation could allow the Iyika to strike Lagos. Inan grasps the stakes: if such ruin hit a city, countless civilians would die. The vow of “Duty before self” steels him, but it also forces him to confront that any hope of peace has died on this field.
Resolving that the war must end decisively, Inan rejects reconciliation and accepts the need to destroy the Iyika, regardless of what it costs his relationships with Amari and Zélie. Nehanda orders Ojore to summon the soldiers for another attack, but Inan counters that a frontal assault will fail while the Iyika remain united.
Shifting to strategy, Inan proposes weakening the Iyika beyond repair by dividing them and then forcing surrender. He identifies the leverage point: Amari and Zélie’s hatred of him. Inan decides to use himself as the wedge to fracture their alliance, committing fully to a divide-and-conquer plan that marks a decisive turn in the war.
