CHAPTER FIFTY-ONE: ZÉLIE
Overview
Zélie, reeling from Inan and Amari’s apparent betrayals, sprints back to defend the sanctuary. She rallies Mâzeli, Bimpe, and Mári, then leads a coordinated Reaper assault that obliterates several military transports. As more maji arrive, Zélie solidifies leadership of the sanctuary’s first defensive line.
Summary
Zélie runs from her meeting with Inan, seething at his seeming lies and unable to process Amari’s actions. Hearing caravans closing in on the sanctuary, she fears Nehanda could bring the mountain down, burying the Iyika.
Reaching a forward line of Reapers, Zélie projects calm for Mâzeli and Bimpe despite their fear. With no elders yet evacuated, she decides they must hold the first wave. Zélie sends Mári to summon the elders and all available fighters, keeping Mâzeli and Bimpe close to form a core defense.
Facing dozens of soldiers, including tîtáns with various elemental auras and even Reaper-lavender glows, Zélie orders a circle and prepares a combined Reaper incantation. She prays for protection, then synchronizes breaths with her team to merge their shadows.
Their fused ashê condenses into a single massive arrowhead of darkness. When released, it tears down the trail and engulfs the lead wagons. Soldiers inside are reduced to ash, and three transports are destroyed in a single strike, halting part of the advance.
As more maji sprint in to join the stand, the sight strengthens Zélie’s resolve. She urges her Reapers to strike again, committing to hold the line until the sanctuary can fully mobilize.
