CHAPTER EIGHTY-EIGHT: INAN
Overview
At a victory feast, Inan announces plans to dismantle the monarchy, aiming to replace it with a fairer order. The crowd turns against him, but before consequences unfold, the Iyika breach Lagos to free captives. Chaos erupts in the palace, forcing Inan to order an immediate evacuation.
Summary
Inan stands on the throne room dais, resolved to end the monarchy now that Nehanda is subdued. He faces a hall of celebrating nobles and officers, reflecting on the legacy of the throne and envisioning a new order for Orïsha rising from the ashes of war.
He begins a speech invoking Sky Mother and lost legends to frame Orïsha’s history and the monarchy’s origins. Building to his decision, Inan declares he will set the kingdom’s affairs in order and then abolish the institution of the throne. The crowd erupts in alarm and resistance as guards struggle to contain the surge toward the stage.
Before the confrontation can escalate, a thunderous roar and rainbow light signal an external assault. Inan spots a breach in Lagos’s wall and realizes the Iyika elders have come to liberate the captives taken in Ibadan. He orders everyone to flee the palace immediately.
Panic consumes the hall as tables overturn and goblets crash. As Inan warns of the Iyika’s approach, the throne room windows shatter, confirming the palace has been breached and forcing an urgent evacuation amid chaos.
