CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN: INAN

Overview

Inan, shaken by seeing Zélie, wrestles with duty and feeling as his forces surround the sealed scroll room. Jokôye and Nehanda demand lethal force, but Inan insists the Iyika be taken alive to avoid escalation and find their base. The tîtáns assemble, and preparations to apprehend begin.

Summary

Inan stands outside the newly sealed wall to the scroll room, stunned after glimpsing Zélie and overwhelmed by the resurgence of their connection. His turmoil leaves him unsure whom to protect as he confronts the reality that the Iyika have breached the temple and trapped themselves within.

General Jokôye arrives with Nehanda and Ojore, surveying heavy casualties and ordering all remaining forces and tîtáns to the door. The wounded are tended, including Emeka, whose severed forearm underscores the cost of the Iyika’s strike and fuels demands for no restraint.

Nehanda urges lethal action, and Jokôye presses to strike to kill, arguing the rebels cannot be allowed to secure whatever lies inside. Inan recognizes the threat but recalls past choices and the consequences of choosing duty over those who once chose him.

Resolving his conflict, Inan counters their orders and commands that the Iyika be taken alive to prevent escalation and locate their base. Despite visible frustration, Jokôye complies, positioning soldiers to apprehend the rebels the moment the wall opens and moving Inan to the back as tîtáns mass for the coming confrontation.
