CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN: AMARI
Overview
Amari and Inan reunite in her dreamscape, reconcile, and share information about Zélie and the Iyika’s demands. Inan proposes drafting a treaty and meeting the Iyika leaders alone, with Ojore covering his absence. He invites Amari to co-rule after peace, while Amari fears Zélie won’t spare him.
Summary
Amari draws Inan into her blue-lily dreamscape, where their guarded reunion dissolves into an emotional embrace. They grieve their losses and find relief in a space where pain feels softened, then settle to talk.
They compare dreamscapes and recent wounds: Inan cannot reenter his own without agony and bears a new scar from Zélie. When Amari asks about Zélie, Inan’s tenderness shows; Amari shares that Zélie leads a small Reaper clan and finds joy in caring for them, yet remains intent on killing Inan.
Amari explains the Iyika’s rising power and their desire to place Zélie on the throne. She outlines the Iyika’s demands—power, freedom from persecution, and true representation in the monarchy. Inan, eager to end the war, declares these reasonable and asks how to deliver them credibly.
Recognizing the Iyika won’t trust Amari’s word alone, Inan proposes drafting a treaty and presenting it personally to their leaders. He plans to slip out of the palace alone, with Ojore covering his absence, given the royal council would never approve after Chândomblé.
Amari questions her place after peace. Inan answers that Orïsha needs a queen willing to make amends and invites Amari to rule with him, promising to share the throne. Amari accepts, buoyed by hope for unity, yet privately worries that Zélie will strike before their plan can take root.
