CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE: AMARI
Overview
Zélie discovers Amari can absorb Connector tîtán magic, mirroring Nehanda’s power. Realizing a path to defeat her mother without an army, Amari commits to this strategy. The Iyika launch a high-risk escape: Kenyon builds a massive fire as Zélie opens the wall, culminating in a clash of wind and flame.
Summary
Inside the sealed scroll room, Zélie tests Amari’s magic and detects immense ashê surrounding her. Guided by Zélie, Amari senses heartbeats beyond the wall and pulls blue wisps of ashê through it, proving she can absorb Connector tîtán magic—an ability like Nehanda’s.
Zélie frames this power as the key to defeating Nehanda: with enough Connector tîtáns nearby, Amari could overwhelm her as she did Ramaya. Amari recognizes she may not need armies or the maji, only her gift, and forms a new plan while the group continues gathering scrolls.
Preparing their escape, Jahi builds a barricade and grudgingly acknowledges Amari’s mettle. Kenyon incants and shapes twin streams of fire into a blazing sphere at Zélie’s back, ready to flood the hall the instant the exit appears.
Zélie opens the wall; soldiers and a general’s order erupt from the corridor. As Jahi’s howling winds surge down the hall, the cyclones collide with Kenyon’s growing inferno, igniting a chaotic clash of elements as the Iyika attempt to break through.
