CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN: INAN
Overview
Inan recovers from his explosive magic that subdued the Iyika and faces the moral cost of victory. Nehanda tightens her influence, insisting on ruthless strategy. Jokôye executes a defiant Burner with majacite to force compliance, hardening the regime’s stance while deepening Inan’s internal conflict.
Summary
Inan lies injured after unleashing an uncontrolled stunning burst that subdued the Iyika. Medics bind his arm as Nehanda arrives with sedatives, chastising Inan for acting without her and urging him to involve her in future plans to avoid losing him again.
General Jokôye and Ojore report success and present captured Iyika, bound in majacite with hoods. Inan feels hollow at the victory, recalling past royal brutality, but Jokôye pushes to extract intel and eradicate remaining cells.
Jokôye orders the hoods removed and interrogates the prisoners. When a defiant Burner refuses to speak, Jokôye prepares a majacite injection while Ojore restrains the girl. Inan, disturbed by the echo of his father’s methods, starts to intervene.
Nehanda restrains Inan and argues that to protect the kingdom he must distinguish who to protect and who to eliminate, framing the Iyika as the cause of Lagos’s destruction and starvation. Torn but swayed, Inan remains still as Jokôye injects the Burner, killing her painfully.
Nehanda reassures Inan that his actions have already surpassed past monarchs and urges him to stay the course and end the war. As Jokôye reaches for another needle, Inan’s conflict lingers, yet he accepts that the Iyika must be destroyed to stabilize Orïsha.
