CHAPTER FOURTEEN: INAN
Overview
Inan awakens from near death to find magic restored and Lagos under siege. Nehanda, armored, tries to evacuate him as alarms and devastation reveal the palace and city in ruins. Witnessing firebombs batter Lagos, Inan is rescued by cousin Ojore, who identifies the attackers as the Iyika, confirming open war.
Summary
Inan jolts awake, choking and in pain, realizing magic has returned despite his sacrifices and the wound from his father’s majacite blade. Disoriented in the king’s quarters, he hears a war horn and sees the palace in disrepair. Nehanda bursts in, armored, desperate to get the king to the cellars, then is stunned to find Inan alive.
Soldiers seize Inan and Nehanda to evacuate, but Inan breaks free to seek answers. From a balcony, he beholds Lagos devastated: marketplaces shattered, divîner districts burning, walls replaced by rubble mounds enclosing the city. A fiery sphere rises over the ruins and bursts into raining firebombs.
As explosions near the palace, a scarred soldier drags Inan to cover—his cousin Ojore from the naval academy. A blast rocks the palace, showering them with glass and smoke. When Inan demands answers, Ojore identifies the assailants as the Iyika and declares that war has begun.
