CHAPTER SEVENTY-THREE: ZÉLIE
Overview
After rescuing Roën from the flooded tunnels, Zélie fights to keep him alive despite his severed arm and massive blood loss. When Roën stops breathing, Zélie realizes “Zïtsōl” means home and channels Reaper power to forge a life-thread. She revives him by binding his heart to hers, deepening their bond and raising the personal stakes.
Summary
Zélie hauls Roën from the water, his arm lost beneath a boulder, and drags him to a narrow shore. She performs frantic first aid, compressing the wound and fashioning a tourniquet with his belt and a levered stone while trying to keep him conscious.
As Roën gasps for breath, he recalls his mother’s rain song and hums a fragile tune. Zélie urges him to keep singing, but hypoxia and blood loss overtake him. He whispers “Zïtsōl”—home—and his body goes still. Zélie’s grief surges as she sees only a fading golden spark within his heart.
Remembering her ìsípayá’s entwined lights, Zélie realizes the gold thread has always been Roën. She calls to Oya and channels Reaper power; her tattoos glow purple as she weaves a broken, crystalline life-thread.
Forcing the thread into Roën’s chest, Zélie pours her dwindling strength into the fading spark, binding his lifeforce to hers. The effort drains her to the brink of unconsciousness as Roën’s body settles back to the stone.
Collapsing atop him, Zélie listens through the darkness and hears it: a fragile heartbeat, renewed and now linked to her own, confirming that her desperate tether has pulled Roën back from death.
