CHAPTER THIRTY: ZÉLIE
Overview
As the Iyika swell with refugees and shortages, Zélie visits an injured Amari before an elder meeting. Healers refuse to treat Amari after her brutal duel with Ramaya, deepening Amari’s isolation. Zélie confronts Amari about power and responsibility, extracting a promise to make amends and contribute to the embattled council.
Summary
Zélie weaves through the crowded sanctuary, reflecting on the Iyika’s swelling numbers, dwindling rations, and constant royal raids. Called to an elder meeting, Zélie detours to Amari’s new quarters in the elder tower, where Tzain urges sensitivity as Amari refuses to see a Healer.
Inside, Amari struggles to cover severe bruises from the ìjà mímó with Ramaya, her right arm in a makeshift sling. After learning multiple Healers refused treatment, Zélie suppresses her anger and helps apply pigment, while Amari admits she tried to apologize to the still-unconscious Ramaya.
Tension peaks when Amari asks if Zélie hates her. Zélie reminds Amari she promised not to use Connector techniques against a maji and accuses her of choosing victory at any cost, like the monarchy. Amari breaks down, apologizing and admitting she lost control but doesn’t know how to fix it.
Calming, Zélie explains that true magic is identity and sacrifice, not brute power, and that tîtáns like Amari wield it against people still hunted for theirs. Chastened, Amari agrees to apologize to the elders and Connectors. Zélie finishes concealing Amari’s bruises and urges her to attend the council because “it’s bad out there” and the Iyika need her.
