CHAPTER FIFTY-NINE: AMARI

Overview

In the sanctuary’s aftermath, factions argue whether to flee or strike Lagos. Kenyon pushes for war while Tzain shields grieving Zélie from pressure. Wracked with guilt, Amari vows to end the conflict by confronting Nehanda with Connector tîtáns and draining Inan. Zélie interrupts, declaring a different path to peace.

Summary

Amari, burdened by guilt after the sanctuary attack and Mâzeli’s death, joins a mass gathering on the third mountain as elders debate their next move. Nâo urges abandoning the exposed sanctuary, while Na’imah argues nowhere in Orïsha is safe. Kenyon rallies for an assault on Lagos, insisting the Iyika are not defenseless.

Tension spikes when Kenyon demands Zélie be forced to fight again. Tzain confronts him, defending Zélie’s grief and refusing to let her be dragged from her room. The crowd fractures into competing shouts, underscoring the Iyika’s disunity and urgency.

Determined to prevent further losses, Amari resolves to end the war decisively. She proposes surrounding herself with Connector tîtáns to confront Nehanda and declares she can drain Inan’s life if necessary, accepting the personal cost to stop the monarchy’s advance.

Before Amari can present her full plan, Zélie emerges from seclusion, blood still in her hair, and halts the debate. Zélie announces there is another way to end the war, redirecting the Iyika’s focus and postponing Amari’s proposed direct confrontation.
