CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO: INAN
Overview
Inan follows Nehanda into the palace cellars and discovers her secretly paying foreign mercenaries linked to majacite. At the war council, reports confirm the Iyika are moving south.
Inan deduces their true destination is a power-amplifying temple in the Funmilayo Jungle and orders an interception, resolving to capture Amari and Zélie.
Summary
On his way to the war room, Inan notes Lagos’s recovery after the crackdown on the Iyika. Spotting Nehanda slipping into the palace cellars, he follows and overhears her paying two masked foreign mercenaries, referencing prior majacite attacks and unfinished plans. When discovered, Nehanda claims she seeks information on Amari and the Iyika.
Back in the war room, advisors report stabilized borders, reestablished communication, and reduced assassination attempts, though the Iyika remain a substantial force. General Jokôye cites activity originating from the Olasimbo Range and sightings of the group moving south.
Amid fears over Lagos’s incomplete defenses, Inan questions the Iyika’s route and extends their path on the map, realizing it leads to an ancient maji temple in the Funmilayo Jungle that can amplify powers. He concludes the Iyika intend to reach it before Lagos.
Inan commits to leaving immediately to intercept, acknowledging he cannot harm Amari but pledging to capture her for the kingdom’s security. When asked about Zélie and the others, he directs the focus to disabling and capturing them first, postponing decisions on punishment.
