CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX: INAN
Overview
Inan disguises himself and slips from the palace with Ojore to locate the Iyika’s camp. They’re discovered, prompting a clash as Burners conduct a joint ritual that ignites a blazing red sun and spreads fire. Cornered by a wall of flames trapping Ojore, Inan unleashes uncontrolled magic that shatters his arm.
Summary
As night falls over Lagos, Inan resolves to counter the Iyika’s ration attacks by finding their forest camp. He disguises himself, hides his white streak, and prepares to slip from the palace. Ojore catches him but insists on accompanying him, refusing to let Inan go alone.
They travel through the ravaged outskirts, discussing Inan’s faltering magic and Ojore’s lingering trauma from fire. A false alarm from a hyenaire exposes Ojore’s fear, but he pushes on, determined to strike back at the maji. After hours, they spot a small Iyika group—only nine rebels—around a fire and decide to return for Nehanda and the tîtáns.
Two Burners intercept them. When the rebels try to seize the “king,” Ojore suddenly kills one Burner, and Inan knocks out the other. The Iyika camp rallies, chanting together to raise a crimson “red sun,” superheating the forest as Lagos’s alarm sirens begin to wail in the distance.
Ojore charges and fells another Burner with knives, enraging the Iyika leader, who conjures a towering wall of fire to trap him. With Ojore about to be consumed, Inan’s desperate attempt to use magic surges out of control. He blasts with such force that the magic shatters the bones in his arm, exposing both his volatility and the escalating stakes.
