CHAPTER EIGHTY-FIVE: INAN
Overview
On the night of a royal gala, Inan resolves to end the cycle of corruption by dissolving the monarchy. He confronts Nehanda, rejects her ruthless methods, and secretly sedates her with her own concoction, stripping her of magic. With Nehanda neutralized, Inan sets out to remake the kingdom.
Summary
Inan prepares before a mirror, feeling unexpectedly certain that he must act decisively. During the gala, Nehanda arrives triumphant and bedecked in gold, assuming Inan has finally aligned with her. Inan offers apparent reconciliation, acknowledging her intentions while masking his true plan.
They toast "to securing the kingdom," but Inan reveals his decision to dissolve the monarchy that night. He argues the throne itself corrupts, citing Amari’s descent in Ibadan as proof that power, not magic, drives Orïsha’s ruin. Nehanda dismisses him, attributing his stance to grief over Ojore.
As Nehanda turns to leave, she staggers—Inan spiked her wine with her own sedatives. Nehanda attempts to summon tremors, but her magic weakens and fails. Inan guides her to the bed as the drug overtakes her, making clear he anticipated her tactics.
With Nehanda incapacitated and stripped of power, Inan departs, declaring this will be her last gala. He sets out to leave his mark by ending the monarchy and reshaping the kingdom’s future.
