CHAPTER SIXTY-SEVEN: AMARI
Overview
Amari leads the Iyika to an underwater entry into Ibadan, timing an assault for the guards’ shift change. Nâo escorts Zélie and Roën through the lakes to locate Inan and Nehanda, while Tzain stays behind. Quietly, Amari tasks Jahi and Imani with a contingency, preparing to act if the infiltration fails.
Summary
After days of tunneling near Ibadan, Kâmarū opens a passage to water-filled caves. Dakarai’s starmap scrying reveals village life and a blurry view of Nehanda and King Inan inside a pyramid ahéré with officials. Amari sets the plan: strike at sunrise during the guard change once Nâo charts the lake routes.
Nâo volunteers to dive and asks for partners. Roën steps up as the best tracker inside Ibadan. Amari refuses Tzain’s offer, insisting on a magic-wielder, and Zélie unexpectedly volunteers despite her hostility toward Amari, determined to protect Tzain and end the war.
As the team prepares, Amari quietly instructs Jahi to move with Imani into the mountains once others sleep, signaling a secret contingency if the main plan falters. Tension deepens between Amari and Zélie; Zélie rejects Amari’s thanks and focuses on the mission. Nâo kisses Khani goodbye and begins the Tider incantation.
Nâo parts the underground waters with blue light, creating a moving air pocket. Roën leaps first, Zélie follows after a farewell from Tzain, and the trio submerges toward Ibadan’s lakes. Amari reassures Tzain but steels herself: if Zélie, Nâo, and Roën cannot find Nehanda and Inan in time, Amari will trigger her fallback to finish the war.
