CHAPTER FIVE: ZÉLIE

The warship lands at Zaria to a silent, wary crowd of nobles, kosidán, soldiers, and cloaked maji at the fringes. Zélie steadies a trembling Amari, framing her ascent as destiny despite doubts about being a tîtán. Roën reminds them of practical stakes and confirms his men are positioned.

To give weight to the moment, Zélie brings Nailah, and Amari descends the ramp riding the lionaire, appearing regal and powerful. The display moves their allies but sharpens tensions. Roën warns the gathering is no coronation, and his lookout flags a thin soldier reaching for his sword.

Acting on Roën’s nod, Harun intercepts and removes the threat. Roën explains many in the military resent Amari as a maji sympathizer and prefer her presumed death. Soldiers patrol with hands near majacite blades, acknowledging noble tîtáns while watching maji with suspicion, reflecting a broader campaign against them.

The group approaches a massive sand dome rally site, its walls stained with smeared Iyika markings, a reminder of unrest. Zélie reassures Amari about security and draws strength from a young maji who whispers “Jagunjagun,” recognizing Zélie as a soldier of their cause. Inspired by what Baba wanted for their people, Zélie commits to protect Amari.

Amari dismounts at the archway and, buoyed by Zélie’s support, steps inside the dome to address Orïsha, while Zélie follows as guard, ready for further threats amid factional hostilities.
