Chapter 33
Overview
Avery, Jameson, and Grayson’s library search exposes both the brothers’ rivalry and Grayson’s fear that Avery threatens the Hawthorne family, especially himself. Jameson finds a disguised copy of Faust containing red acetate and circled words that point to the phrase “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
The clue shifts the investigation toward Tobias Hawthorne’s will itself, suggesting that the inheritance may conceal another hidden message or explanation. Avery is no longer merely following the brothers’ game; Avery begins connecting the clues on Avery’s own.
Summary
Avery continues searching the library with Jameson and Grayson, feeling the tension between the two Hawthorne brothers. Jameson needles Grayson with flirtatious comments about Avery, while Grayson responds with controlled irritation, making it clear that Grayson intends to stay wherever Avery is.
As the search drags on, Grayson quietly tells Avery that Jameson is grieving Tobias Hawthorne and using the puzzle as a rush to make the loss mean something. Avery challenges Grayson’s claim that Avery is a threat to the family by pointing out that Avery is specifically a threat to Grayson, because Avery inherited the fortune and place Grayson expected.
Jameson interrupts by announcing that he has found something: a copy of Sail Away whose cover hides a first edition of The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus. Inside the book, Avery discovers a translucent red square taped to the cover. Grayson identifies it as red acetate, a tool Tobias liked to use for revealing hidden messages.
Avery finds circled words scattered through the text of Faust. Jameson writes the words on his hand as Avery reads them aloud: “Where. A. There is. A. There is. Way.” Avery and Jameson rearrange the words into part of the proverb “Where there is a will, there is a way,” realizing the missing word is “will.”
Jameson reasons that the red acetate is not meant for the black-ink book but for another document. Grayson agrees that the book’s hidden message tells them where to use the film. Avery concludes that Tobias may have left a copy of his will written in red ink, suggesting the next stage of the puzzle is tied directly to the will that changed all their lives.
