Chapter 47

Overview

Avery and Jameson investigate Tobias Hawthorne's proposal bridge, with Jameson evading further explanation about Emily's death and Grayson's role in it. Their uneasy partnership becomes more intimate and dangerous as they search the bridge from every angle.

Avery proves herself an active player by noticing the key clue: a creaking board that hides a mechanism. Opening it reveals a carved symbol that may be infinity or the number eight, giving the inheritance puzzle a new lead.

Summary

Avery does not answer Jameson's challenge to guess which of his statements about Emily was true. Jameson avoids explaining what he meant by saying he watched Emily Laughlin die or that Grayson “happened to her,” and redirects Avery toward investigating the proposal bridge near Wayback Cottage.

At the bridge, Avery notices Tobias Hawthorne's influence in the craftsmanship and the puzzle-like design of the place. Jameson assumes Tobias built something into the bridge, and both begin searching the railings and balusters for hidden markings or mechanisms. Avery deliberately refuses to be a passive participant and uses her phone flashlight to inspect the structure herself.

Jameson climbs onto the railing to get a new perspective, then decides Avery should look underneath the bridge while he holds her. Avery is unnerved by the intimacy and danger, especially after Jameson's confession about Emily, but she focuses on the underside of the bridge. Avery sees algae, shadows, and two layers of boards, but at first finds nothing useful.

Back on the bridge, Jameson paces while Avery tries to think. The repeated creak of one board catches Avery's attention, and she orders Jameson to stop and back up. Together they identify the same board as the source of the sound, then discover it shifts slightly when pressed.

Avery and Jameson search for a latch and find small knots in the wood near the balusters. Pressing them together releases the mechanism, allowing the board to rotate. On the hidden underside of the board, they find a carved symbol: Jameson reads it as infinity, while Avery suggests it could simply be the number eight.
