Chapter 81
Overview
Avery begins decoding the latest riddle and identifies “twelve” and “noon” as likely clues, but the remaining instructions still stump her. Xander’s arrival shifts the chapter from isolation to renewed collaboration, as Avery admits the emotional fallout with Jameson and Grayson while still choosing to continue the game.
By recognizing the stained-glass piece as familiar, Xander offers Avery a possible way forward. The chapter reinforces Avery’s determination to keep playing even without the support of the two Hawthorne brothers most entangled with Emily’s past.
Summary
Avery sits on the steps and studies the new riddle inscribed with the stained-glass piece. She breaks down the first lines and connects the top of a clock to twelve, then links “meet me at high” with noon, reasoning that noon divides morning from the later part of the day.
Avery cannot solve the second half of the riddle, which refers to twisting, flipping, seeing something, and taking “them two at a time.” She wonders whether the stained-glass pieces must be turned, reversed, or assembled together, but she has no clear answer yet.
Xander joins Avery on the stairs and notices her distress. Avery admits that his brothers do not want anything to do with her after the trip to the Black Wood, and Xander ruefully acknowledges that his attempt to bring them together backfired.
Avery then reveals that the game is not over and shows Xander both the inscription and the stained glass she found after the Black Wood. Xander studies the piece and recognizes that he may have seen something like it before, suggesting a possible new lead.
