Chapter 64
Overview
Nash guides Avery into a hidden wing of Hawthorne House built around locks, games, and childhood excess, revealing more of Tobias Hawthorne’s strange methods and the family’s damaged past. The personalized arcade message confirms that Tobias’s game still seems to anticipate Avery’s presence, while Nash’s comments about Skye, Zara, and the boys expose another layer of Hawthorne dysfunction.
Avery does not reach the final library yet, but she discovers that it lies above an elaborate game room, keeping the search for the Davenport and the next clue moving deeper into Tobias’s designed labyrinth.
Summary
Nash leads Avery through Hawthorne House, passing a bricked-up doorway that once led to Toby’s wing. Nash explains that Tobias Hawthorne had the wing sealed after Toby died, reinforcing Avery’s sense that the family’s history is filled with extreme, secretive reactions.
Nash opens a heavy steel door with a combination dial and lever, revealing not a single library but another hidden wing of the house. The hallway is decorated with locks, keys, dials, and keypads, and Nash explains that Hawthornes learn lockpicking young. Avery sees an actual single-person airplane in one room, and Nash says Tobias began building this part of the house when Nash was born, partly to compensate for Skye’s failed attempt at parenting.
Nash brings Avery into an arcade with pinball machines, consoles, a bar, and sugary drinks. Avery plays one pinball game, and after entering her initials, the machine displays the same personalized welcome message she saw at the bowling alley: WELCOME TO HAWTHORNE HOUSE, AVERY KYLIE GRAMBS! The message makes Avery feel Tobias Hawthorne’s continuing presence and manipulation in the game.
At the bar, Nash shares more family history. He explains that the room was unveiled when Grayson came home as a baby, and that Skye repeatedly left and returned pregnant while Zara and Zara’s first husband struggled to conceive. Avery recognizes the cruelty and dysfunction beneath the Hawthorne family’s wealth and games.
Nash then leads Avery into a stark game room filled with thousands of board games from around the world. Avery is momentarily awed, remembering the board games she played with her mother and imagining the Hawthorne brothers competing there. She refocuses on finding the Davenport and asks again for the library; Nash points upward to a fire pole and chute, revealing that the library is above them.
