Chapter 19
Overview
Jameson enters Avery's room through a secret passage and reveals that Hawthorne House is filled with hidden routes, compartments, and puzzles tied to Tobias Hawthorne's lifelong games with his grandsons. Jameson frames Avery herself as Tobias's final puzzle, intensifying the mystery of why Avery inherited the fortune and making clear that the Hawthorne boys now see Avery as the key to what Tobias left behind.
Summary
That night, Avery settles into her new room at Hawthorne House after a long shower, trying to rest in the luxury of the estate. A voice suddenly tells Avery to pull the candlestick, sending Avery into defensive panic until Avery realizes Jameson Hawthorne is speaking from behind the fireplace.
Avery pulls and angles the candelabra as instructed, triggering a hidden mechanism that opens the fireplace. Jameson steps through and explains that Hawthorne House is full of secret passages. Avery is disturbed by the invasion but also intrigued by the existence of another hidden feature in the house.
Jameson reveals that the mysterious keys Avery found are part of a Hawthorne family tradition. When Jameson asks whether Avery believes Avery is family, Avery thinks of the DNA test Zara's husband is running and admits Avery does not know. Jameson flirts with Avery while implying that everyone in the house will soon want something from Avery.
Jameson then explains his theory: Tobias Hawthorne filled the house and the boys' childhoods with puzzles, riddles, secret compartments, and impossible challenges. After Tobias died and left Avery the fortune, Jameson concluded that Avery is Tobias's final riddle, chosen for a reason Jameson wants to discover.
Avery pushes back against being treated like a game and orders Jameson not to manipulate or touch Avery. Jameson insists that Avery is special and that Avery must also want to know why Tobias chose Avery. Before leaving through the secret passage, Jameson places an envelope on the mantel and says Tobias left Avery the fortune, while leaving the Hawthorne grandsons only Avery.
