Chapter 69
Overview
After Drake's arrest, suspicion shifts sharply toward Libby because the police have taken her in for questioning, and Alisa openly frames Libby as a possible accessory. Nash clashes with Alisa over Libby's lack of protection, revealing tensions between legal strategy, loyalty, and the Hawthorne way of handling authorities. Avery orders legal help for Libby but is left shaken by the possibility that the one person she trusts most could be implicated.
Summary
Avery reviews the known facts after Drake's capture: Drake tried to force Avery's car off the road, had a gun that likely matched the bullets Oren recovered, and had a felony record. After Avery gives the police statements about the attack, the earlier shooting, Drake, and Libby, Alisa escorts Avery back to Hawthorne House.
Before Avery and Alisa reach the porch, Nash storms out and confronts Alisa because the police have taken Libby from the house. Alisa argues that Libby did not have to go if Libby was not under arrest, but Nash angrily points out that Libby would not know her rights unless someone protected her.
Alisa implies that Libby may be an accessory to attempted murder, which wounds Avery because Libby is Avery's sister. Nash reveals that Drake has continued texting Libby and that Nash has been urging Libby to block him, but Libby feels guilty. Alisa presses Nash on why Libby feels guilty and why he is afraid of Libby talking to the police.
Nash pushes back by invoking the Hawthorne family's rule to never speak to authorities without a lawyer. Disturbed by the thought of Libby alone with the police, Avery orders Alisa to send someone from the firm to represent Libby. Alisa agrees, and Avery then tells Alisa, Oren, and everyone else to leave Avery alone because Avery feels manipulated by their decision to use her as bait.
Avery realizes that if doubt about Libby takes root, Avery will feel completely alone. Before Avery can retreat, Nash adds another complication: a media consultant is waiting in the sitting room, suggesting that Avery's public image is still being managed even amid the family crisis.
