Chapter 73
Overview
Avery enters the gala prepared to face hostile reporters, but the evening turns personal when Grayson reacts with horror to Avery’s appearance. Thea has deliberately styled Avery to resemble Emily Laughlin, using Avery as a weapon to unsettle the Hawthorne family.
The reveal deepens the emotional damage surrounding Emily’s death and reinforces Avery’s uncertainty about whom to trust. Thea’s behavior also reframes her as an active manipulator, not merely a wounded observer of the Hawthornes’ past.
Summary
Avery arrives at the gala under intense media scrutiny. Because Alisa has prepared Avery with practice questions, Avery avoids reacting angrily when a reporter asks about Avery’s mother and instead gives a controlled answer about being grateful to be alive and present.
The event takes place in an art museum, where Avery descends a grand staircase into a room full of people watching her. At the bottom, Avery sees Grayson in a tuxedo. Grayson freezes at the sight of Avery, then drops his glass, shocking Avery and drawing attention.
Grayson confronts Avery about Avery’s hair, necklace, and dress, but Avery does not understand what has upset him. Grayson can only say one word: Emily. Avery realizes that Avery’s appearance has somehow been made to resemble Emily Laughlin, the dead girl whose memory haunts the Hawthorne brothers.
Avery retreats to the bathroom, where Thea appears and tells Avery that Avery looks perfect. Thea sends Avery a photo of Emily, and Avery sees that Emily’s hair, dress color, and necklace closely match Avery’s gala look. Avery realizes Thea manipulated the shopping and styling process by suggesting green and supplying the reference image.
Thea admits the resemblance was deliberate but says Thea did not do it to Avery; Thea did it to the Hawthornes. When Avery insists the Hawthornes did not kill Emily and mentions Rebecca’s explanation that Emily died because of her heart, Thea turns the accusation back on Avery by asking how sure Avery is that the Hawthorne family is not trying to kill Avery. Thea ends by acknowledging that the Hawthornes are twisted and broken, and that Thea is, too.
