Chapter 67
Overview
Avery’s controlled public reappearance begins with a staged shopping trip, but Thea’s presence turns the outing into another layer of pressure. Thea reveals that Rebecca has been crying and that Jameson is miserable, forcing Avery to consider how the shooting and old Emily-related wounds are affecting others.
The chapter also clarifies Alisa’s strategy: Avery is being deliberately put in front of paparazzi to manage public perception. Even a dress choice becomes strategic, as Avery tries to hide her stitches while Alisa shapes her image.
Summary
Oren escorts Avery to an SUV for Alisa’s planned shopping trip, but Avery discovers that Thea has inserted herself into the outing. Thea claims she wants to shop, then privately tells Avery that they need to talk about Rebecca.
In the car, with bodyguards and Alisa nearby, Thea presses Avery about what happened to Rebecca. Thea says Rebecca has clearly spent the night crying and suspects the issue is not only about Jameson or Emily. Avery realizes Rebecca must know about the shooting and was forbidden to tell anyone, which leaves Avery wondering why Rebecca is so upset.
Thea then notes that Jameson is obviously miserable and implies Avery is the cause. Avery pushes back by asking why Thea hates Jameson and why Thea is really at Hawthorne House, suspecting that Zara and Thea’s uncle may have asked Thea to stay close to Avery. Thea avoids giving Avery a real answer.
When the SUV arrives at the boutique, paparazzi swarm the vehicle. Avery complains that she already has plenty of clothes, but Alisa makes clear that the outing is about visibility: Avery is there to be photographed and to help control the public narrative after the recent violence.
Inside the closed boutique, Thea selects an emerald-green gown and comments on Avery’s eyes. Avery asks for something less revealing, specifically a dress that covers her collarbone and therefore her stitches. Alisa supports Avery’s request while still accepting Thea’s suggestion that the dress be green.
