After learning that Tobias Hawthorne left Avery nearly his entire fortune, Avery calls Max from the balcony of the penthouse suite in the hotel Avery now owns. Max reacts with disbelief and throws out wild theories for why Tobias might have chosen Avery. Avery admits the fear she has been avoiding: Tobias may be connected to her family, and Avery's father may not really be her father.

Avery has Tobias's sealed letter in her lap but has been unable to open it. Max urges Avery to read it before being interrupted by Mrs. Liu and ending the call. Avery begins to open the envelope, but a knock at the suite door stops her.

Oren tells Avery that Grayson Hawthorne is at the door and explains that his security team would not have let Grayson reach the floor if they considered him dangerous. Avery allows Oren to open the door, despite knowing Grayson has lost his expected inheritance and may see Avery as responsible.

Grayson confronts Avery with controlled anger. He accuses Avery of manipulating Tobias Hawthorne or running a con, warns that he will uncover the truth, and says he will do anything to protect his family. Avery denies his accusations, then shuts the door on him before Oren has to intervene.

Shaken by Grayson's threat, Avery retreats to her bedroom and finally opens Tobias's letter. Instead of an explanation, the message contains only an apology: Tobias Hawthorne writes, "I'm sorry."
