Chapter 42
Overview
At the Hawthorne Foundation, Grayson replaces Zara as Avery’s guide and forces Avery to confront the enormous moral weight of controlling Tobias Hawthorne’s charitable empire. Their tense dynamic shifts as Grayson admits he may have misjudged Avery, while Avery discovers that Grayson’s analytical worldview mirrors Avery’s own.
The chapter also advances the inheritance puzzle when Avery notices that the estate map contains “Black Wood” and “the Brook,” suggesting the Hawthorne grandsons’ middle names point to physical locations on the property. The moment is interrupted by Nash’s call about Avery’s sister, signaling a new personal crisis.
Summary
Avery arrives at the Hawthorne Foundation still distracted by Emily Laughlin’s photograph and Rebecca’s connection to the dead girl. In the Foundation lobby, Avery is struck by walls of black-and-white photographs of people around the world, which make Avery think about why she wants to travel.
Instead of Zara, Grayson meets Avery. Avery realizes Grayson took the lobby photographs, and Grayson explains that Tobias Hawthorne believed a person had to see the world to change it. Avery confronts Grayson about his threats and his background checks on Avery and Avery’s mother. Grayson gives Avery the file on Avery’s mother, including a photograph of Avery’s mother holding Avery, then shows Avery a blank page representing every purchase Avery has made since inheriting: nothing.
Grayson does not fully apologize, but Grayson admits he may have misjudged Avery. When Avery says she tried to give money to a homeless chess partner, Grayson treats that as proof that Avery needs education in philanthropy. Grayson brings Avery to a conference room lined with maps and tells Avery that with Tobias Hawthorne’s resources, Avery is responsible for the world, not just individuals.
Grayson explains that he deferred college to work on Foundation strategy and had been preparing a pitch for Tobias Hawthorne before the inheritance changed everything. Grayson reveals that the Foundation conservatorship will belong to Avery when Avery turns twenty-one, just like the rest of the fortune. The loss clearly hurts Grayson, but instead of asking Avery to be sorry, Grayson tells Avery to be worthy of what Avery has been given.
Grayson teaches Avery his approach to charitable giving: decisions should be based on objective outcomes, strategic interventions, risk, and empirical cost-benefit analysis rather than emotion. Avery follows the math and realizes that Grayson’s mind works uncomfortably like Avery’s own. The scale of the Foundation’s annual power overwhelms Avery, because Avery understands that real lives may depend on Avery’s future choices.
After Nash calls Grayson away, Avery studies the maps and finds a hand-drawn map of Hawthorne House and its estate. Avery notices Wayback Cottage, where the Laughlins have lifetime occupancy, and thinks again of Emily and Rebecca. Then Avery sees that the northern forest is labeled the Black Wood and the western waterway is labeled the Brook, forming Blackwood and Westbrook, two names that may connect to the Hawthorne grandsons’ middle names. When Grayson returns, Grayson gently tells Avery that Nash’s call was about Avery’s sister.
