Chapter 59
Overview
Oren moves the investigation into the shooting forward while keeping it hidden from the Hawthornes, forcing Avery to pretend nothing is wrong among people she cannot fully trust. At breakfast, Avery learns that Rebecca has spread gossip about Avery and Jameson’s kiss, but not the attack, complicating Avery’s relationships and suspicions.
Avery’s attempt to conceal her injuries fails when Nan, Xander, and Grayson notice her pain. Grayson’s demand to speak privately signals that Avery’s secrets and the danger surrounding her are becoming harder to contain.
Summary
After leaving Libby’s suite, Avery meets Oren in the hall. Oren tells Avery that a police report has been filed discreetly and that detectives are coordinating with Oren’s team. Because Oren believes it is useful for the Hawthorne family not to know about the investigation yet, Avery is told to act as if nothing happened.
Avery asks about Libby, worried by Drake’s texts and Libby’s emotional state. Oren says Libby went to breakfast and has no visible injuries. Avery confirms that Libby’s security detail is watching her, but Oren’s answer reinforces the larger danger: Libby is not the likely target, Avery is.
Avery dresses to hide her stitches and scratches, then goes downstairs. In the dining room, Libby sits curled in a chair with Nash beside her, clearly keeping watch. Avery passes Zara, Constantine, Nan, and Xander, painfully aware that members of the Hawthorne family may have motives to want her dead.
Thea intercepts Avery and hints that Avery has been “busy.” Avery suspects Thea has been watching her, possibly because Zara brought Thea to Hawthorne House for that purpose. But Thea soon reveals that Rebecca contacted her about Avery and Jameson being together in Emily’s old room, not about the shooting. Xander confirms that Rebecca texted him too, meaning the gossip about Avery and Jameson’s kiss has spread while the attack itself remains secret.
Nan orders Avery to bring her the pastry tray. Avery forgets her injury, reaches for the tray, and visibly flinches in pain. Nan notices and makes Xander help; Xander immediately recognizes Avery is hurt and shields her from Thea. Grayson then appears, states that Avery is clearly not fine, and asks to speak with her in the hall.
