Chapter 34
Overview
Avery learns that the clue points to the Red Will, but Alisa requires Avery to undergo a carefully managed makeover before arranging a viewing. The chapter reframes Avery's appearance as a strategic story she must control in a hostile world of wealth, scrutiny, and Hawthorne family politics.
Xander's comments reveal that he, too, understands being judged by appearances, while Libby's phone suggests Drake remains a dangerous emotional pull. Zara's arrival signals that Avery's public image may now matter to the family's next move.
Summary
Avery asks Alisa about the will after solving the clue involving red acetate and the phrase about a will. Alisa immediately understands Avery means the Red Will and says a viewing can be arranged, but only after Avery does something for Alisa: submit to a full makeover arranged by a brother-sister stylist team.
The stylists fill Avery's room with expensive clothing, jewelry, and salon equipment while Libby watches in amusement. Libby has already accepted her own more polished look because the team bribed her with boots, creepy lockets, and leather pants, and she insists she is still herself. The stylists push Avery to think of clothes and hair as a deliberate public message rather than a shallow concern.
Avery resists choosing an image, but the female stylist explains that if Avery does not tell her own story, someone else will tell it for her. Xander enters with scones and reinforces the point, noting from his own experience that appearances affect how people judge him as a Hawthorne. Avery recognizes that Xander also knows what it means to be seen through other people's assumptions.
Avery finally chooses the “preppy with an edge” option because pretending to be innocent or perfectly at home among the wealthy would feel false. The stylists layer her hair, darken it subtly, shape her brows, tan her, and keep her makeup minimal. When Avery looks in the mirror, she sees someone who might plausibly belong in Hawthorne House.
As Avery asks Libby for her opinion, Avery notices Libby clutching her phone with a familiar frightened look and realizes Drake is texting her. Avery worries Libby might respond despite Drake having hurt her and betrayed them. Zara then arrives, coolly dismisses Xander's joke that no one believes Avery seduced Tobias Hawthorne, and asks to speak with Avery privately, suggesting the political stakes around Avery's image have changed.
