Chapter 86

Overview

Rebecca’s confession implicates Skye in giving Drake access to the estate, forcing Avery to confront the danger inside the Hawthorne family. Grayson wins Avery’s temporary trust in handling his mother, but the emotional stakes deepen when Jameson unlocks the final door and reveals the truth of his guilt over Emily’s death.

Xander then exposes his own hidden role: Tobias tasked him with keeping the game moving until the brothers were brought together. The chapter reframes the inheritance puzzle as a deliberate confrontation with old wounds, with Avery revealed as an essential fifth participant.

Summary

Avery absorbs Rebecca’s revelation that Skye was in the tunnels with Drake on the night Avery was shot. Avery realizes Skye likely gave Drake access to the estate and directed him toward the Black Wood. Grayson overhears enough to confront Rebecca, who admits she should have spoken up but says she could not betray Grayson’s mother.

Avery points out that Drake later tried to run Avery, Alisa, Oren, and Thea off the road, proving Rebecca’s silence had dangerous consequences. Grayson sends Rebecca away and asks Avery to let him handle Skye himself, promising no further harm will come to Avery or her people. Avery distrusts that promise because Grayson will protect family, but she agrees to play him for the decision.

Grayson proposes a simple guessing game: if Grayson guesses Avery’s chosen number from one to ten, Avery will let Grayson deal with Skye his way; if Grayson fails, Avery will go to the police. Avery chooses two, assuming the odds favor her. Grayson guesses correctly, and Avery tells the truth, accepting the result while feeling the pull of Grayson’s trust and protectiveness.

Xander and Nash arrive in the hidden room, and Grayson and Nash use their handprints to release two of the remaining locks. Jameson delays but eventually appears, places his hand on the final pad, and opens the door. Instead of entering, Jameson tries to leave, insisting Tobias Hawthorne designed the trap for him because Tobias knew what happened on October eighteenth.

Jameson confesses that he followed Grayson and Emily to the water, watched them jump, and later saw Emily struggling after Grayson left for towels. Believing Emily was manipulating him, Jameson walked away and did nothing until she collapsed and died. Jameson reveals that Tobias later confronted him and urged him to tell Grayson, but Jameson refused.

Xander rejects Jameson’s belief that the game exists only to punish him. Xander reveals Tobias knew he was dying and asked Xander to make sure the game continued until Jameson and Grayson both reached this point. Avery realizes Xander has been guiding events and using her to draw the brothers forward, but Xander insists he does not know what lies beyond the door or why Tobias chose Avery; Grayson concludes the game was meant for all five of them.
