Avery stays home from school and tells Libby she needs a mental health day. Avery wants to ask about Drake’s texts but cannot, fearing Drake may have contacted Libby or somehow been involved in the attack, though Avery reasons that Oren’s security would have caught him if Drake had entered the estate.

Libby immediately drops any plans and declares the day Sister Time. To distract both of them and continue the clue hunt, Avery asks Libby to help find a Davenport. Their research shows a Davenport can mean either a sofa or a desk, but Avery concludes Tobias Hawthorne’s clue likely points to a desk with compartments and hidden storage.

Avery, Libby, and Oren begin searching Hawthorne House. Libby describes how much of the enormous estate she has explored while being kept out of public view because of bad publicity. Oren mentions more features of the house, and Avery asks whether Tobias Hawthorne had additional offices.

They inspect another of Tobias Hawthorne’s offices and nearby rooms, including a cigar room, a billiards room, and a small windowless room containing a sensory deprivation chamber. Finding no Davenport there, Avery and Libby switch to a systematic room-by-room search, with Oren staying close because of the recent shooting.

The search leads them to the spa, where they find Skye Hawthorne waiting for a massage. Oren refuses to let Skye’s masseuse, Magnus, onto the estate because Hawthorne House is closed to visitors for security reasons. Libby asks what security matter Oren means, and before Avery can stop the answer, Skye says Grayson told her there was trouble in the Black Wood, exposing to Libby that something dangerous happened.
