Chapter 29
Overview
Libby brings Avery new electronics and accidentally exposes her to the public campaign forming against her. Drake smears Avery in an interview, while Zara and Skye hold a press conference implying that Avery may have exploited Tobias Hawthorne and confirming through genetic testing that she is not a Hawthorne.
The chapter raises the legal and public stakes around Avery’s inheritance, showing that the Hawthorne women are moving aggressively to discredit her. Avery is angry but too exhausted to act immediately, choosing to contact Alisa the next day.
Summary
After returning to her room, Avery is found by Libby, who brings a stack of electronics that Alisa told her to buy because Avery has not purchased anything for herself. Libby gives Avery a laptop, tablet, and e-reader, trying to provide practical help and a little escapism, though Avery feels that life inside Hawthorne House already feels unreal.
Avery’s attention drifts to the fireplace and the possibility of hidden passages, and she remembers Grayson warning that she will not last a month in the house. Libby then shows Avery a video interview with Drake, who presents himself as a friend of the Grambs family and publicly describes Avery as lonely, attention-seeking, and burdened by “daddy issues.”
Angry, Avery takes the tablet and looks through related coverage about herself. She finds a press conference featuring Zara Hawthorne and Skye Hawthorne, contradicting Grayson’s claim that Skye had not left her room in days.
At the press conference, Zara praises Tobias Hawthorne as a businessman, philanthropist, and family man, then announces that the Hawthorne Foundation and his investments will continue. She says the family is working with authorities, elder-abuse specialists, and medical and legal experts to understand the situation, strongly implying that Avery may have manipulated or defrauded Tobias.
Zara also releases genetic test results proving that Avery is not Tobias Hawthorne’s daughter and not a Hawthorne by blood. Avery recognizes this as an escalation in the family’s campaign against her; Libby urges her to call Alisa and use her lawyers, but Avery, exhausted and unsurprised by the attack, decides to wait until morning and go to bed.
