Avery explores Hawthorne House’s private bowling alley and is struck again by the absurd scale of the inheritance. The alley is fully branded with the Hawthorne initial, making Avery feel that the estate was never meant to be hers, even as the system greets her by her full name.

The personalized welcome unsettles Avery because it suggests Tobias Hawthorne may have arranged it before his death. While bowling, Avery thinks about her mother, their old bowling outings, and whether Tobias’s choice to leave Avery the fortune might somehow be connected to her mother rather than to Avery herself.

Avery’s thoughts turn to her mother’s unfinished secret and to the question of what Tobias might have been sorry for. Frustrated and emotionally charged, Avery bowls several games until she is exhausted, then decides to keep exploring the house in search of the gym.

Avery finds an enormous athletic complex and enters a room with a two-story climbing wall, where Jameson is climbing high above the ground without a harness. Ignoring Grayson’s warning to stay away from Jameson, Avery tries climbing for the first time and quickly reaches a difficult overhang.

When Avery slips, Jameson catches Avery’s hand and offers either to help swing Avery upward or let Avery drop. Remembering the danger of being alone with a Hawthorne and without Oren nearby, Avery chooses to drop safely instead of trusting Jameson further.

After landing, Avery finds herself attracted to Jameson despite recognizing that involvement with him would only complicate her already dangerous year at Hawthorne House. Avery then notices Grayson watching from the doorway, refuses to be intimidated, and tells Jameson that Avery will see Jameson in the library.
