Dr. McGowan, who asks Avery to call her Dr. Mac, reviews Avery’s new Heights Country Day schedule. Avery will take American Studies and Philosophy of Mindfulness while continuing her current science and math work if the workload allows.

Dr. Mac suggests an elective called Making Meaning, which studies how art conveys meaning and includes civic engagement with cultural institutions. Dr. Mac notes that the course may be useful because the Hawthorne Foundation has historically supported local museums, theater, ballet, opera, and similar organizations.

When Dr. Mac asks what Avery is passionate about, Avery initially thinks in practical terms: college credits, standardized tests, and a path that could still benefit her even if Zara’s challenge to the will succeeds. Avery realizes, however, that the inheritance may have changed her options enough to let her think beyond survival and practicality.

Avery blurts out that she has always wanted to travel. When Dr. Mac asks whether Avery is drawn to art, history, cultures, nature, and faraway places, Avery answers yes to all of it, unexpectedly emotional.

Dr. Mac responds kindly and promises Avery a list of electives. Dr. Mac explains that study abroad is impossible during the required year at Hawthorne House, but future programs may be available, and Avery might even consider delaying graduation. Avery recognizes that, unlike her old life, this school and her new circumstances make possibilities feel newly open.
