Chapter 15
Overview
Avery enters Hawthorne House as its new owner and begins to understand the estate's immense scale, staff, security, and traditions. The chapter also reveals tensions within the household: the Laughlins view Avery as an outsider, Alisa has a painful connection to Nash, and Nash returns despite claiming he was leaving.
Nash's protective reaction to Libby's injury complicates Avery's distrust of the Hawthornes, while a sudden crash pulls Avery deeper into the family's ongoing chaos. The house is no longer just an inheritance; it is a guarded, secretive world full of loyalties, history, and conflict.
Summary
Avery crosses the threshold into Hawthorne House and is overwhelmed by the scale of what now belongs to her. Alisa begins a tour, naming rooms such as the theater, music room, conservatory, solarium, formal dining room, kitchens, gym facilities, courts, rock wall, and bowling alley.
The Laughlins, the older couple from the will reading, explain how the household functions. Mr. Laughlin says many specialists are on retainer, while Mrs. Laughlin handles daily cooking because Tobias Hawthorne valued privacy and disliked outsiders in the House. Oren adds that every staff member and visitor is vetted and tracked by his security team.
Nash Hawthorne unexpectedly returns, despite having seemed ready to leave the estate. Alisa immediately withdraws to contact her firm and leaves Avery with a new phone containing key numbers. Mrs. Laughlin's warning to Nash about Alisa makes Avery realize that Alisa and Nash have a painful history, explaining Alisa's earlier warning about Hawthorne men.
Nash insists Avery is not the enemy and says Tobias Hawthorne wanted this outcome. Libby defends Avery as only a kid, and Nash notices Libby's black eye. His quiet offer to take a name affects Libby, who is not used to anyone besides Avery protecting her.
Oren takes Libby away to meet Hector, the person assigned to her security detail, joking that Nash will keep Avery safe. Avery warns Nash to leave Libby alone, revealing her protectiveness. A crash and thud interrupt them, and Nash explains that whatever is happening is why he came back, then invites Avery to follow him toward the disturbance.
