Chapter 39

Overview

Skye turns Avery's attempt to question her into a confrontation about money, Jameson, and Avery's place in the Hawthorne family's emotional history. She frames Jameson as restless and self-destructive, compares him to Toby, and warns that Avery may be only another escape for him, as Emily was.

The chapter's key revelation is that Skye did not choose her sons' loaded middle names; Tobias Hawthorne did. That shifts suspicion and meaning back toward Tobias's long-planned game and deepens the importance of the Red Will clue.

Summary

After Skye Hawthorne insists on speaking to Avery alone, Avery finds herself trapped in an uncomfortable conversation with Skye while Skye bathes, drinks champagne, and theatrically claims to forgive Avery. Skye also assumes Avery will continue giving Skye financial support because Skye is the Hawthorne grandsons' mother, but Avery challenges the demand and threatens to leave unless Skye answers Jameson's question.

Skye stops Avery by making the exchange conditional: Skye will answer if Avery explains her intentions toward Jameson. When Skye describes Jameson as grieving and special, Avery turns the conversation toward Skye's brother Toby. Skye says Tobias Hawthorne ruined Toby by spoiling him and preparing him to be heir, leaving Skye and Zara behind after Toby was gone.

Skye then explains why Tobias favored Jameson over Grayson. According to Skye, Grayson was dutiful and seemingly the obvious favorite, but Jameson had the hunger Tobias recognized: he was always searching for something and wanting to disappear. Skye says Jameson used to vanish into the walls as a child and always wanted to get lost again.

Skye warns Avery that Avery is not special in the way Avery may think; to Skye, Avery is only another way for Jameson to get lost, just as Emily once was. Skye stresses that Avery is no Emily, then shifts back to the question Avery and Jameson came to ask. When Avery asks who chose the boys' middle names if Skye did not, Skye reveals that Tobias Hawthorne chose them.
