Rebecca finds Avery in the hidden underground space and asks what Avery is doing there. Avery, remembering that Rebecca had no alibi the night Drake shot at her, directly asks where Rebecca was during the shooting.

Rebecca does not answer immediately and instead explains the events surrounding Emily’s death. Emily had been taking dangerous risks, so Rebecca told their parents, who restricted Emily from seeing the Hawthorne boys. Emily regained some freedom through Thea, who was secretly dating Rebecca, until Emily discovered the relationship and reacted with anger and jealousy.

Rebecca says Emily pressured Thea to cover for her plan to go cliff diving at Devil’s Gate, even though the jump was especially dangerous because of Emily’s heart condition. When Rebecca could not stop Emily through their parents or Thea, Rebecca went to Jameson and played him a recording of Emily talking about the boys. Rebecca admits that although she told herself she was protecting Emily, she also wanted to punish Emily for taking Thea away from her.

Avery realizes that Jameson broke up with Emily after Rebecca’s intervention, and Rebecca believes that breakup may have pushed Emily to take even greater risks. Rebecca’s guilt frames how Emily’s death has damaged everyone around her: Rebecca blames herself, Thea blames the boys, and Grayson carries the burden as well.

When Rebecca apologizes to Avery, Avery fears that Rebecca may be about to harm her in Emily’s name. Rebecca denies arranging the attack and explains that Tobias Hawthorne once showed her the tunnels as a private secret. On the night of the shooting, Rebecca saw Drake in the tunnels but stayed silent because she felt she owed Emily.

Avery presses Rebecca to reveal who was with Drake. Rebecca finally says Drake was not accompanied by one of the Hawthorne boys, but by their mother, exposing a new and dangerous suspect in the attempt on Avery’s life.
