Chapter 72
Overview
Oren tells Avery that Drake has incriminated himself but is trying to blame Libby, a story contradicted by the lack of gate footage. The likely explanation is that Drake used unknown estate tunnels, which suggests someone familiar with Hawthorne House helped him.
As Avery travels to the gala, she realizes Drake may have been deliberately used as a disposable weapon to kill Avery and frame Libby. Avery agrees to appear publicly united with the Hawthornes while privately staying on alert, shifting the strategy from reaction to deception.
Summary
At the top of the stairs, Avery asks Oren whether the police have gotten a confession from Drake and whether Drake has named anyone working with him. Oren tells Avery that Drake has implicated himself, but Drake is trying to claim Libby was the mastermind. Oren rejects that version because there is no security footage of Drake entering through the gate, which there would be if Libby had let him in.
Oren explains that security now believes Drake entered the estate through underground tunnels similar to Hawthorne House’s secret passages. Oren knows of two tunnel entrances and says both are secure, but Avery understands the implication: in a place like Hawthorne House, there may be more entrances even Oren does not know about.
On the way to the gala in a bulletproof SUV, Avery considers who could have known enough about the estate to help Drake. Avery doubts Drake or Libby would have discovered the tunnels independently, so Avery reasons that someone deeply familiar with Hawthorne House may have used Drake as a weapon, knowing his violence, his hatred of Avery, and his connection to Libby.
Avery also considers that the accomplice may have tempted Drake by suggesting Libby would inherit if Avery died, allowing Drake to do the killing and take the fall. Meanwhile, Alisa focuses on the optics of the event and explains that Avery will sit with the Hawthornes because the foundation bought tables. Avery distrusts the arrangement, suspecting that at least one Hawthorne may still want Avery dead.
Alisa argues that public friendliness with the Hawthorne family will help silence theories about Avery’s inheritance. Avery pushes back by naming the darker possibility that one of them is behind the attempts on Avery’s life. Oren assures Avery that security remains on high alert but wants the conspirator to believe their plan to frame Drake and Libby has worked, and Avery resolves not to lose the element of surprise this time.
