Chapter 60

Overview

Avery tests Grayson by revealing that she was shot at, and Grayson’s furious reaction convinces Avery that Grayson likely did not know about the attack. The revelation also exposes the danger Jameson faced in the Black Wood and heightens the tense, protective rivalry between the Hawthorne brothers.

Nash steps in as the family’s reluctant caretaker, redirecting Jameson and Grayson while also pressing Avery about skipping school and Libby’s welfare. Avery remains wary of the Hawthornes but begins weighing Nash’s protective instincts against the threats surrounding Libby.

Summary

Avery goes with Grayson despite suspecting that trusting any Hawthorne is risky. Because Oren will follow and because Avery wants to judge Grayson’s reaction directly, Avery tells Grayson that she was shot at the previous night.

Grayson reacts with immediate tension and anger, demanding details from Oren. Avery interprets Grayson’s response as evidence that Grayson did not know about the shooting, though Avery also remembers that Grayson benefits if Avery dies because the foundation would pass to him.

Grayson warns Oren that Oren will be personally responsible if anything happens to Avery. Jameson arrives and needles Grayson, and Grayson realizes that Jameson was also in the Black Wood, meaning the shooter could have hit Jameson too. Jameson responds flippantly, deepening the volatile tension between the brothers.

Nash interrupts before the conflict escalates. Nash orders Jameson to get ready for school, tells Grayson that their mother wants him, and then asks whether Avery needs a ride to Country Day.

Avery says she is not going to school, surprising Oren and drawing Nash’s disapproval. When Nash asks whether Libby knows, Avery bristles but thinks again of Drake’s texts to Libby and considers that there may be worse dangers than Libby becoming involved with a Hawthorne. Nash insists that everyone in the house is his concern, and Avery agrees to talk to Libby.
