Chapter 10
Overview
Avery and the Hawthorne family absorb the shocking terms of Tobias Hawthorne’s will: Avery now owns the estate, the fortune, and Hawthorne House. Mr. Ortega makes clear the will is designed to prevent challenges, while John Oren reveals he has been assigned to protect Avery.
The chapter shifts Avery from confused outsider to legal heiress, making her both powerful and vulnerable. The Hawthorne family’s resentment, the will’s hidden traps, and the coming public attention establish immediate danger around her inheritance.
Summary
Avery reels after hearing that Tobias Hawthorne has left her nearly everything. Skye and Zara react with anger and suspicion, while Grayson insists there must be a mistake. Avery, overwhelmed and certain that impossible things like this do not happen to her, agrees that the will must be wrong.
Mr. Ortega shuts down the argument by stating that there is no mistake and that Tobias Hawthorne’s will is unbreakable. He warns the Hawthorne heirs that anyone who challenges Avery’s inheritance will forfeit whatever share of the estate remains to them. The warning makes clear that Tobias anticipated resistance and built traps into the will.
When Grayson orders Avery to leave, Alisa points out that Hawthorne House now belongs to Avery. Mr. Ortega confirms that Avery owns the fortune, the properties, and the house, while the current residents have tenancy only unless they give Avery cause to remove them. He also states that the tenants cannot try to remove Avery.
The room falls silent as the threat around Avery becomes obvious. John Oren steps between Avery and the Hawthorne family, revealing that Tobias’s final request was for Oren to work for Avery as security. Xander and Jameson both warn, in different tones, that the Hawthornes will not be Avery’s only problem, because the whole world will want access to the newly created heiress.
Avery finally accepts that the situation is real. Tobias Hawthorne has not only made Avery unimaginably wealthy but also placed Avery at the center of a dangerous public mystery and inside a house full of people who have every reason to resent her.
