Chapter 14

Overview

Drake’s betrayal turns Avery’s inheritance into a public spectacle, exposing Libby’s abuse and forcing Avery into the glare of national attention. When Avery reaches Hawthorne House, the family immediately tests her with a deliberately deceptive key puzzle.

Avery solves the challenge by seeing past appearances, signaling that she may be capable of surviving the Hawthornes’ games. Jameson’s cryptic commentary deepens the sense that the house, the inheritance, and Avery herself are part of a larger puzzle.

Summary

Oren challenges Alisa over the paparazzi leak, but Alisa determines that the information did not come from her firm. Alisa points to Libby’s boyfriend as the source, and Libby quietly corrects her: Drake is now her ex.

Libby repeatedly apologizes because she told Drake everything about Avery’s inheritance, the conditions of the will, and where they were staying. Avery understands that Libby tried to calm Drake after leaving him, but once Drake learned about the Hawthorne money and realized Libby would not let him claim it, Drake hit Libby, Libby left, and Drake went to the press.

Oren escorts Avery through a side exit into an SUV while reporters shout questions about Avery’s fortune, her connection to Tobias Hawthorne, and rumors about Avery being Tobias’s illegitimate daughter. During the drive, Avery receives a text from an unknown number with a news headline about her and the message, “Hey, Mystery Girl. You’re officially famous.”

At Hawthorne House, more paparazzi wait outside the gates, but inside there is no welcome from the Hawthornes. The front door is locked, and Alisa returns with an envelope of ornate antique keys. Jameson speaks through the intercom, refuses to simplify the challenge, and calls Avery “M.G.,” which Avery explains means “Mystery Girl.”

Instead of trying every key, Avery studies the keys like a chess problem and realizes most of them only look different; their working ends are identical. She finds the single key with a different mechanism, opens the door, and proves she can meet the Hawthornes’ games on their own terms. Jameson responds that things that look different on the surface can be the same at their core.
